WORLDCOMP'15 Tutorial: Prof. Rob Byrd

Last modified 2015-07-12 11:18

Analyzing and Protecting RFID and Card Access Systems
Prof. Rob Byrd
Associate Professor of IT and Computing
Abilene Christian University
Abilene, Texas, USA

Date & Time: July 28, 2015 (05:40pm - estimated duration: about 2+ hours)
Location: Platinum Room

The goal of the Security Labs Development Project at ACU was to develop a set of learning modules, including the written components of labs to be used across an academic program, or for self-paced individual learning in cyber security. The tutorial presented in this session demonstrates two of the developed lab modules. Each of the modules support at least one of the 10 domains of the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional).

The two lab modules that participants will experience are 1) RFID Access Control and 2) Magnetic Card Access Control. An overview scenario will provide a case study to prepare participants hack into and then understand how to protect each system.

Here is what the Tutorial will deliver: A wireless router for participant access to the lab materials and lab scenario environment, Card readers/writers and RFID sensors and encoders. Software that will enable participants to see what is going on within the system, A written explanation of what the lab objectives are and how a typical Access systems works including various components and vulnerabilities, hands-on practice at seeing where the vulnerabilities are, ideas and protocol recommendations to secure the participants' access systems.

In addition to Dr Byrd, there will be lab assistants to help participants understand the concepts and specific techniques of the lab experience. Those who attend will be invited to provide their email address for receiving additional information and additional lab modules, including specific equipment requirements and possible vendors. (Dr Byrd has no affiliation with any equipment vendors.)

    1. To allow participants to experience first-hand how vulnerability many current security technologies and to understand how to make systems more secure.
    2. To provide an exemplar lab environment experience for those teaching security and give them something to take home and implement immediately.

People who want hands-on learning with security technologies and educators who want to experience the workshop as an example of the labs that are in the newly developed cyber security technologies lab manual.

Dr. Rob Byrd is an Associate Professor in the School of Information Technology and Computing at Abilene Christian University, Texas. He teaches cyber security, web technologies, system administration, and is a program evaluator for the ABET accrediting organization. Dr. Byrd's workshop assistants are undergraduate researchers in the field of cyber security and have contributed significantly to the lab projects.

If you can read this text, it means you are not experiencing the Plone design at its best. Plone makes heavy use of CSS, which means it is accessible to any internet browser, but the design needs a standards-compliant browser to look like we intended it. Just so you know ;)
